The High Chaparral is a Western-themed television series which aired on NBC from 1967 to 1971. The show was created by David Dortort, who had previously created the hit Bonanza for the network. The theme song was also written and conducted by Bonanza scorer David Rose.

High Chaparral was the name given to the ranch owned and operated by the Cannon family in the Arizona Territory during the 1870's. Stubborn, proud Big John Cannon (Leif Erickson) is unceasing in his determination to carve a life in the untamed land. Frequently at odds with Big John is his firebrand of a younger brother Buck (Cameron Mitchell) and John's sensitive son, Billy Blue (Mark Slade). After his first wife's death, Big John marries Victoria (Linda Cristal), daughter of wealthy Mexican Land-owner, Don Sebastian Montoya (Frank Silvera) as a political alliance. Her roguish brother Manolito (Henry Darrow) accompanies her to the Cannon ranch and becomes a permanent member of the household. Sam Butler (Don Collier) is hired as the ranch foreman, while his brother Joe (Bob Hoy) along with Reno (Ted Markland), Pedro (Roberto Contreras), Ira (Jerry Summers), and Vaquero (Rudolfo Acosta) are the hard-working, fun-loving ranch hands.

The High Chaparral was a great Western-themed television series, which was aired from the NBC television networks from 1967 to 1971. It was created by the all time great David Dortort, who previously has created the Bonanza for the NBC networks. The theme song was also written by the Bonanza scorer David Rose.

The series was starred with Leif Erickson as "Big" John Cannon, who is a rancher and ranches with his Brother Buck in the state of Arizona since 1870s. The Big John Cannon has a son as well. In an unfortunate eventuality he lost his wife. Actually his wife was killed by an Indian arrow, while she was working in the kitchen. To ensure his family’s safety the Big John Cannon decided and married to Victoria Montoya, who was the daughter of a well-known Don Sebestian Montoya. This marriage helped the character of Victoria’s brother to come into the scene as well.

PRODUCTION:

The High Chaparel was Dortort’s brainchild and his dream. Therefore, he kept doing work on bonanza calmly to think the plot and make it concrete as much as he can. In 1967 he started making the all time great series High Chaparral, which was indeed the greatest hit. After the end of this series in 1971, Dortort’s never came back to Bonanza, but instead got retired from the industry.

There was also a DVD launching, but no one still knows about it. However, the first season premiered in Germany with English subtitles. The quality of the DVD was superb and there was no error except a few minutes of German subtitles instead of English.

The series was no doubt a great hit and the efforts of Dortort’s can be seen in the series.
