Mr. Belvedere is an American sitcom based on the Lynn Belvedere character created by Gwen Davenport for her 1947 novel Belvedere, filmed as Sitting Pretty (1948) with Clifton Webb as Mr. Belvedere. The series stars Christopher Hewett in the title role, who takes a job with an American family headed by George Owens, played by Bob Uecker.

The show was originally broadcast on the ABC network from March 15, 1985 until July 8, 1990.

The premise of the program was that a middle-class family in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, a suburb of Pittsburgh, takes in an English butler after he immigrates to the United States.

The posh butler, Lynn Belvedere, struggled to adapt to the Owens household. The breadwinner, George, was a sportswriter. His wife Marsha was attending law school. At the time the show started, Kevin was a senior in high school, Heather was a freshman, and Wesley was in elementary school. Over time, Marsha graduated from law school and started a career as a lawyer, Kevin went off to college and got his own apartment, and Heather moved up in high school.

Mr. Belvedere had an average-sized ratings base, but it was never a phenomenally popular show; the show did not rate in the Top 30 shows in any of its six seasons. The show was quietly canceled in 1987, but was brought back due to higher-than-expected fan interest, and premiered its fourth season in December of that year.

Mr. Belvedere DVD complete series collection with all episodes and seasons on DVDs Mr. Belvedere is a TV show that was first aired in USA on ABC in 1985, last episode was aired in July 1990. It based upon a 1947 Gwen Davenport novel “Belvedere”.

The British actor Christopher Hewett played Mr. Belvedere, and Bob Uecker played George Owens, one of other leading character. The novel “Belvedere” inspired the 1948 “Sitting pretty”. This time Lynn Belvedere was played by Clifton Webb who gained an Academy Award nomination for best actor. The film was about a writer who accepts a job as a baby sitter for three bratty kids. This movie was followed by two other ones based upon the same character: “Mr. Belvedere Goes to College” in 1949 and “Mr. Belvedere Rings the bell” two years later.

Before ABC’s show there have been several attempts to build a TV show based on this character, in ’50 and ’60, the most famous was the 1965 version in which Mr. Belvedere was played by Victor Buono, but no one had the success of Hewett version. Mr. Belvedere worked in the house of George Owens and Marsha, his wife, in Beaver Falls, a suburb of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The three kids were Kevin, Heather and Wesley. At the beginning of the show, Kevin is a senior in high school, Heather is a freshman and Wesley is in elementary school, while George is a sportswriter and Marsha is attending law school.

During the show, George becomes a sportscaster, Marsha becomes a lawyer and Kevin leaves his family house, Heather and Wesley move up in their education. Lynn Belvedere has the secret aim to write a gossips and busybodies novel, that’s why he decides to work as a babysitter, so at the end of each episode, he writes on his journal what happened in the day along with some witty comments.

Most of episodes focus on Lynn and Wesley relationship, as he is who needs a babysitter more than his brothers. Lynn helps Wesley, and sometimes the other children too, in their everyday troubles. So every episode is focused on more or less serious matters that can occur in a kid’s life.
